The Bureau of Automotive Repair requires a smog check every other year to renew your vehicle registration. Your DMV renewal notice will tell you whether a test is due this time around, and a smog check is also required when a vehicle changes ownership.

Gasoline vehicles from the 1975 model year and older are exempt, which is why we test everything from 1976 forward. Diesel vehicles from the 1997 model year and older are exempt, as are diesels with a gross vehicle weight rating above 14,000 pounds. Electric vehicles, motorcycles and trailers are exempt as well. Probably not yet. The Bureau of Automotive Repair exempts gasoline vehicles that are eight model years and newer from the smog check for registration renewal. California charges a smog abatement fee with your registration instead. That window rolls forward every year, so a vehicle that was exempt last year can be due this year. Your DMV renewal notice is the thing to check.

Your certificate is sent to the DMV electronically and is valid for 90 days.

In a private sale California asks the seller to provide the certificate, and the vehicle needs to have passed a smog check within the last 90 days. A vehicle bought from a dealer needs to have passed within the past two years. Transfers between immediate family members do not require a smog check at all.

Yes, and not every station in the East Bay can. Diesels are worth a word of warning: they get no rolling model year break the way newer gasoline vehicles do, so if your diesel is a 1998 or newer under 14,000 pounds, it needs a test. Heavy duty vehicles over 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating are not covered by the regular smog check. They fall under CARB's Clean Truck Check, which is a separate program with its own schedule. Almost all vehicles in it are tested twice a year. Diesel engines from 2013 and newer and alternative fuel engines from 2018 and newer get an OBD scan, while 2012 and older diesels get a smoke opacity test and a visual inspection. A vehicle coming in from another state needs a smog inspection before it can be registered here for the first time, even if it is fairly new. Bring the vehicle and your out of state paperwork and we will handle the inspection side.

You get the full report showing exactly what did not pass, which you take to a repair shop. We are a test only station, so we do not do the repairs ourselves, which is also why you can trust our result. Once the work is done, bring it back.
